Paradise by the Dashboard Light

I traveled down South last week to Palm Springs to photograph the first ever “Camp Mighty“, which is a gathering of bloggers and people in social media put on by the Oprah of the internet, Maggie Mason. While I’m not a big event photographer (besides weddings), as my friend Amy (an attendee) says, when Maggie Mason throws a party, YOU GO. My awesome client Allison does PR for Maggie Mason and hooked me up with the job, which I’m ever so thankful for not only being able to attend and document the event, but I got to hang out with Allison and Amy which was so much fun.

Amy and I left at 5AM on Thursday morning, and while that’s way too early in many opinions, I wasn’t about to complain because I’m a sucker for watching the sunrise on a road trip. I snapped these as Amy drove 90 65MPH and we talked each other’s ears off for seven hours only stopping to get gas station coffee with so much chemical creamer “our insides will be pickled”, as Amy says.

Although the route is mainly on I-5, quite possibly the ugliest roadway in America, at this time of day it has a kind of poetic beauty.

You can tell when you officially reach So Cal…

This reminded me how much I love road trips and need to take advantage of the fact that I live in the most beautiful state in the country. I’ve been wanting to go to the Redwoods, Mendocino area, and I always love driving up and down Highway 1… maybe when gas gets cheaper. What’s your favorite California road trip route?

More about Camp Mighty and it’s mightiness in a later post.

  • This was just a lovely weekend. All the way around. Thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Try driving down from Big Sur on highway 1: you HAVE to photograph the Bixby Creek Bridge and have something to eat at Nepenthe, a holdover restaurant/location from the 60’s where all the stars motored to when they wanted to get away from filming.ReplyCancel
